The Exhibition review of Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama is a famous contemporary artist in Japan. She has a retrospective exhibition, which is held in Tate Modern Museum in 5 June. Today i want to write something about my feeling when i have visited this exhibition. Because someone in my class mentioned her works.

The exhibition is divided into fourteen rooms. The arrangement of the exhibition is according to the period of Kusama’s artistic career. Because of her early works mainly focus on oil paintings, so those artworks are configured with the fine canvas frames and hanged on the wall. While the curator puts together by a series of painting and same style. By such arrangement, the audience can clearly understand the ideas of Kusama, processes and development of the period.

The accumulation sculptures area is the most spectacular room. The same shape of the object is copied by thousands times and composed of a variety of shape. The spectators can feel unthinkable through the kind of dense when they enter the room. In the meantime, the audiences can feel the artist’s frightened from the artworks. Due to there are a lot of sculptures put on the ground and in order to give the audiences better appreciation of the artworks without prejudice to the sculptures. The curator designs new equipments. The exhibition does not pull up the cordon in order to prevent the audiences to approach the artworks.  The curator pastes the batten instead of the cordon, which has the similar color of the floor on the ground. When the spectator across the batten, an alarm will be rang and remind the audience not close to the creation.

According to the habitual behavior of the exhibition that wonderful things tend to be in the final, this exhibition is also. When the audience appreciate the oil painting and enjoy the fantastic world that Kusama produced, the next room will bring the audience into the top of the excitement. I`m here, but nothing, like it abstract name, the room lead visitor into the complex spirit world of Kusama. This is a dark room which full of small dots with the effect of fluorescence colour. With the irradiation of ultraviolet lamp, the small dots reflect the weak luster. Relying on these lights can dim to identify items in the room, from the chair to the cup. Also the dots like floating in the space.

Out of the dark room is her recent works area, and then by ushered in the new round of visual feast. The colourful small bulbs though the surface of the mirror reflection and present countless images. The audiences imagine themselves traveling in the universe because of the constant transformation lamps. In here audiences’ cheerful mood will be to reach the top and with the exciting attitude to leave the exhibition.
